Gemini - Graduation EP Review
By Aaron Rush and Ethan Baer
It’s a bold move starting off an album with the title track, an unmistakable display of confidence on the part of Gemini. With “Graduation”, the listener is immediately immersed in a sweeping piano symphony that ever-so-slowly builds with the subtle use of strings and a gentle snare. At this point, you already know that this track is going to be absolutely enormous, the build-up is impressively patient and layered with a cunning series of false drops and oh-so-sweet vocals. Finally, when you think you can’t possibly wait any longer, the beat kicks in and everything breaks collapses at once, the strings evolve in a stunning electronic harmony with the piano and the resounding bass is perfectly complimented by the stunning vocal backdrop.
As Graduation ends and “Feel Me” begins, you hear that same style of vocal sampling in the build, this time with “Feel me” serving as the primary backing to this thunderous bass-monster. If you have a decent set of speakers, you’ll feel this track all the way down to your bones. However, unlike most bass-heavy tracks, “Feel Me” doesn’t overwhelm you, rather, it envelops you entirely as the track moves perpetually forward. Pressure-building synths move in as the bass begins to drop and finally the vocal sample returns to the fore. As the powerful synth-line returns for the final verse, a three-pronged attack assaults your ears and the final drop hits you like a tidal wave. Hold on tight and you just might make it until the wave spits you back out, thoroughly soaked and ready for “H.A.T.D.”
Gemini quickly begins to apply pressure, a chilling synth line and strangely suppressed bass leave you feeling like something must surely be missing. A sudden flurry of action on the Kaos pads accelerates to a rapid crescendo after a flawlessly-placed robotic vocal sample. The swift increase in speed and energy continues to surge each time the “Disco” vocal sample comes in, a display of the very same synth and string building demonstrated so expertly in the first two tracks. With “H.A.T.D.”, however, the instruments barely feels like strings, they are somehow distorted and far more eery. Although this is arguably the “quiet” track on the EP, “H.A.T.D.” still manages to hit devilishly hard…kind of like a mouse with an air horn.
Drawing the album to a close, “Vision” begins abruptly with a high pitched and thoroughly distorted “Who the fuck are you?”. Tension quickly soars in distinct electro style, culminating in a massive vocal drop that brings the bass crashing down with colossal force, unleashing a vast ripple of explosive electro-reverb. A masterfully timed interlude allows the listener a much needed respite as the last fading remnants of the evocative piano melody from “Graduation” usher in the final drop where elements of all three previous songs combine. The end-result is an extraordinarily multi-facated drop that never fails to leave the listener sprawling on the ground no matter how many times they’ve heard it before.

Exclusive Interview with Gemini
Name: Gemini
Age: 21
Location: UK
Your new EP “Graduation” has been booming since its release, where you expecting it to do this well?
No - the support and love I’ve had has been phenomenal…
Many of your fans might not know that you are an accomplished piano player, do you draw inspiration from any pianists?
Not really - more so from musicians.. not necessarily in the form of playing the piano though. could be a guitar chord immitation..
You have accomplished a lot in a short amount of time being that you are 21. What r some of the goals u are still driving for?
To continue to produce music I love.. working towards an album now.
If you had to pick 1 city that you have played in that stood out for any reason, which would it be and why?
Ottawa with THEKNWLDG (@THEKNWLDG)… was off the hook.
If you could pick 1 city in the world that you haven’t played in where would it be?
LA or Miami

Funner by Stephen Jacobs
Release: Mad Era
Genre: Glitch Hop / Midtempo
Label: Simplify Recordings
Catalog: SIMP058EP
Release Date: Out Now
Purchase Link
A milestone of artistic and technical progress in the rapidly blooming career of California electronic-music producer Stephan Jacobs, Mad Era represents a turn towards a more technically complex, glitchy, and compositionally advanced style of production. A dabbler in a vast array of genres ranging from Dubstep and Electro to Hip-Hop and Glitch, Stephan’s latest release through Simplify Recordings manages to tie together all these influences into one cohesive yet wildly diverse project. Squirming, bubbly synthesizers decorate a complex foundation of highly variable drum breakdowns and explosive, slightly mechanical bass-lines. Stephan’s signature transitions from order to chaos remain present in many of the songs on Mad Era, especially in track like “Izzo“. Particularly exceptional and unique for Stephan Jacobs is the track “Cyber Sax” featuring his collaboration with Saxophonist Sergio Flores; lively and soulful melodies sooth the mind of the listener while Stephan demonstrates his vast spectrum of cinematic sound-design while creating a seamless structure for the sax.

18th Century Gangster by K Theory
Release: 18th Century Gangster / Glitch & Blues
Genre: Glitch Hop / Midtempo
Label: Simplify Recordings
Catalog Number: SIMP061
Release Date: Out Now
Purchase Link
Funky with a touch of class, K Theory’s new single with Simplify Recordings, “18th Century Gangster“, fully lives up to its bold title. Bouncy, swinging melodies guide the listener through a perfectly arranged series of cuts and glitches punctuated by cunningly timed vocal samples and an absolutely thunderous bass-line, K Theory shows off all of their considerable versatility as a producer on this phenomenal track; classically composed melodic interludes grip your attention while the fusion of high-energy mid-tempo beats and radically technical drops is sure to keep any dance-floor moving. “Glitch and Blues” again combines elements of rowdy instrumental funk with brilliantly constructed synthetic beats. Staggering synthesizers electrify that listener with their crisp and dynamic swagger while evocative blues-guitar endows the track with an strong nostalgic vibe. With this release, K Theory firmly establishes themselves as an ascendant master at the art of re-creating the feel of organic instrumentation with their own glitched-out, funky beats.

JLD #121 by DJ Irk
We’ve got another WICKEDDDD mix for you all to enjoy, JLD #121 by DJ Irk. This mix is extra big, as DJ Irk is a real pro on the 1s & 2s. I’ve had the chance to watch the man at work, live at gigs and also on my DUBSTEP.FM radio show. This guy has it in the bag! Winner of Ninja Tunes very own Cold Cut’sSolid Steel radio guest mix of the year 2010. No small feat, since everybody appearing on this show is a real master at what they do.
DJ Irk had been living in Montreal for a little bit, but is now back home in England again where he put together this very well planned & executed mix not only for JLD but co-presented on Solid Steel Radioyesterday by Cold Cut themselves. (WOW! is all I can say to that)
This mix is bad ass, so I’ll let Cold Cut take you through it:
Solid Steel in association with Serato (8th July) Irk’s back, and this time he’s on a dubstep, grime and hiphop mission, with this special collaboration mix for Solid Steel and Montreal’s bassmusic podcast J’aime Le Dubstep. We kick off with a few serious UK sounds from Durrty Goodz and BeggarFam, then hit some swirling electronic heaviness from Matta and Siriusmo. Next it’s over to the hiphop for fresh Raekwon and Beasties, plus pure wonkiness from Eprom and South London’s KeepUp! crew. And finally back to more beats and bass from the likes of Culprate and Pinch & Roska, plus Kid Koala’s The Slew project, Wick-It’s Black Keys refix and a familiar Bristol beat right at the end to tie it all up.LINKAGE:
